Flip is a modern e-commerce platform that combines a TikTok-style shopping experience with premium services. Founded in 2019, the company quickly gained popularity by allowing users to discover and purchase products through 60-second videos created by the community. This approach enables customers to watch authentic product reviews, make purchases with a single click, and enjoy express shipping.
My duties
At Flip, I worked in the role of Backend Developer, where I was responsible for developing and maintaining the backend part of the platform in cooperation with the development teams. One of the key tasks was to develop a proprietary solution for generating Open Graph (OG) images. This was needed to reduce costly and long queries to the external API (they even took more than 10s per request) and to simplify the developers’ work. This is one of the things whose results I am most proud of. I created a plug-in for Figma that, based on the selected design (future template), creates an SVG file with additional metadata storing information about the location of the data to be swapped. This file is then sent to the API, where it is converted into a template – based on it, PNG images containing user data will be created. When there is a demand to generate an image, the SVG template is downloaded, it is filled with user data and the PNG image is generated. The entire generation closes in ~700ms per request. While creating this task I managed a small team, together we worked on new features.
Additionally, I managed the system responsible for handling user-displayed posts. I developed and implemented filtering, sorting, and personalization mechanisms, increasing user engagement and improving their experience on the platform. My responsibilities also included general maintenance of microservices, ensuring their reliability, scalability, and performance.
